LOST PROPERTY
There is now another large box full of lost property in the storage room in Brockwell Park, including football boots, jumpers and jackets. Some of the items are nearly brand new and if I had come home without similar items when I was a young boy, I doubt I’d be around today. Please check that your child/ward has not lost any item of clothing recently and contact me ASAP if you think any missing items might be with us.
Please ensure that any clothing worn by your child/ward when attending St. Matthew’s Project activities has their name on the label. We would strongly advise against any child or young person wearing or bringing expensive items – including phones – to activities, as we cannot be responsible for any loss or damage.

The F.A Football Futures Programme
The St. Matthew’s Project has signed up to the FA’s new leadership and volunteering programme, Football Futures. The programme aims to provide young people aged 14-19 with opportunities to gain volunteering experience within schools, colleges and Charter Standard clubs. Participants are encouraged to gain experience across the six following themes:
- Coaching & working with teams
- Refereeing
- Running events
- Developing the game
- Promoting the game
- Respect
The programme is open to anyone interested in leadership and volunteering and you do not have to play football to enrol. Our first young leaders to sign up to the programme are Chloe McInerney and Megan Smith, two long-time members of our girls’ Saturday Club. Congratulations to them.

U13s start New Year with a bang
8 January 2011
Venue: Tooting Bec
Providence House A 1 St. Matthew’s 4
After the Christmas break it was vital that we got 2011 off to a winning start and we did just that with a hard fought win against Providence House A. After going 1-0 up early on with some excellent play once again down the right and a great finish after Providence failed to clear a cross, we found it hard going in the middle of the park. Then a wind-assisted cross-cum-shot found its way into the back of our net to make it 1-1. During the second half we kept it tight at the back and after the wind died down it looked like there was only going to be one winner. After being caught offside a few times, we finally broke clear of the defence and with a cool finish we were 2-1 up. With ten minutes to go our superior fitness levels began to show and we added another two goals late on in the game for a deserved 4-1 victory. Well done boys. (Cliche check: 4)

U12s find nothing over the Rainbow
8 January 2011
Venue: Brockwell Park
St. Matthew’s 0 Rainbow 3 / Rainbow 2 St. Matthew’s 0 (Double Banker)
League new boys, Rainbow, did not have a wasted trip from Hackney. Within the first ten minutes our aim was to concentrate on playing the ball behind the defensive line to put immediate pressure on the opposition, in the hope of defensive errors and the ball falling to our very quick and agile forwards. Unfortunately, we conceded the first goal but afterwards we began to play our usual football, constantly placing the opposition defence under pressure who, to their credit, held out strongly. Our finishing in front of goal let us down while the opposition managed to turn their few chances into goals. Overall, though, I’m pleased with the performance. We stuck to our game plan throughout, even when we were losing. So, all credit to the boys for not giving up and remaining smiling after the game. If we keep playing like this, it won’t be long till the goals do start flying in.
